This Year’s Categories
How to Enter
Fill out an entry form and drop it off at the library with the $5 application fee (cash or check) to the Mount Horeb Public Library by 5pm on Friday, February 10.
Give your dessert a name; the name must not infringe on any trademarks. Fun names tend to capture the imagination of the tasters.
Contestants may enter only one dessert per category, but may enter multiple categories provided they properly pay fees and submit forms for each.
Recipes
Desserts made with raw eggs are NOT permitted.
Nuts are permitted. The Mount Horeb Public Library will not be held responsible for the accurate labeling of items containing nuts or nut derivatives.
Recipes for entries must be emailed to jessica.williams@mounthorebwi.info prior to the event (preferred) or typed/neatly written on a separate piece of paper and submitted with the dessert at drop-off.
List all ingredients in the order used with exact measurements and package sizes. Submit complete directions including cooking times, temperature, and number of servings. If your recipe is not your own invention, please give credit to its source.
Recipes may be published, at the library’s discretion, with entrants’ recognition, without further compensation.
Your Dessert
Bring small/bite-sized pieces (no bigger than 1 inch if possible). Due to high number of “tasters,” try to bring enough portions to serve 60. We recommend you bring a knife and plastic wrap if you plan on cutting your dessert after drop-off. Moist desserts may dry out between setup and the start of the event.
Deliver your entry to the library between 4:45 pm and 5:15 pm the day of the event (Saturday, February 18th). Entries will not be accepted in any other location or at any other time. All entries and materials submitted become the property of the Mount Horeb Public Library. Assume that all desserts will be consumed in their entirety at the tasting.
A maximum of 70 entries may be accepted in total. See the library’s home page for up-to-the-moment information on available entry spots and other contest news.
Judging and Prizes
Doors open and public tasting begins at 6:30 pm. Awards are given after tasting. Contestants are encouraged to stay for the awards.
Judging will be conducted by a panel of appointed judges and by the voting public tasters. Appointed judges will give the Overall Judges’ Choice Award. The public will vote for the Overall People’s Choice Award. One Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice prize will also be awarded in each category. The Professional category entrants will not be eligible for the Overall Judges’ Choice or People’s Choice awards.
Category winners of Judges’ and People’s Choice will receive $15 each and a ribbon. Overall winner of the Judges’ Choice Award receives $100 and a coveted Death by Chocolate trophy. Overall Winner of the Peoples’ Choice Award also wins $100 and a Death by Chocolate trophy.
The professional category entries will not be eligible for the Overall Judges’ Choice or People’s Choice awards. This category will be judged separately by the judges and tasters alike.
To win, contestants do not need to be present at the event. However, the Mount Horeb Public Library cannot appoint anyone to monitor a contestant’s dessert during the competition. Each contestant is responsible for his or her own dessert.
