Summer Library Program 2024


Summer Reading Challenge:


Complete challenges designed for each age level to earn Greenbucks to use at the SLP prize store.
Library staff will sign off on activities between June 10 - August 8.

Want to make an impact with your reading? "Reach Out & Read" is a is a challenge in which each hour you read, you will earn $0.50 to be donated to a local non-profit. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. 

Registration opens June 3. 

(Please come to the library to pick up your game sheet.)


Teen Summer Sweepstakes:

 Ages 13-18? Check something out or come to a library program and get a scratch-off ticket!
Some tickets are instant winners, others can be used as entries for the grand prize drawing.
One ticket per person per day, June 10-August 8.

Reach Out & Read:

"Reach Out & Read" is an alternate Summer Reading Challenge to make an impact with your reading. For each hour you read, you will earn $0.50 to be donated to a local non-profit.

At the end of the summer, library staff will count all the hours read and the total amount up to $500 will be donated to Mount Horeb Neighbors Helping Neighbors. You may participate in both the reading challenge with prizes and Reach Out & Read, but an hour of reading does not count for both programs. You must track your time separately. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library. (Please come to the library starting June 3 to pick up your reading tracker.)


Program highlights:


Monday, June 10 @ 10:30 am

Kick off a summer of fun and learning at this 45 minute show packed with bubble amazement, a variety of tricks and bubble feats, and the science behind the bubbles.


Tuesdays, June 11 & July 16, 3-4:30 pm 

Projects TBA. Keep an eye on the website to see what we'll be making! 
Materials provided. (Ages 11-16)


Friday, June 14, 1-2:30 pm

Make (and eat) several camping foods! No fire required.


Wednesday, June 19 @ 6:30-7:30 pm

Can you identify enough of Taylor’s songs to get BINGO? Make a friendship bracelet and play to win! (Ages 11-16)


Friday, June 21, 10-11 am 

Show off your best friend's best tricks (and more)! To sign up to participate with your dog, please complete this form (starting June 3). Registration is required to participate; if your group is all human and planning to be in the audience, please feel free to just show up!

You can choose which events you would like to participate in; at the start of each round, we will announce the event and call any participants to the arena. The rounds will happen consecutively in the order listed below. If you'd like to join us for one of the later rounds, please feel free to come and go.

Dog Show Events may include: 

  • Pooch parade 
  • Best costume 
  • Best trick 
  • Best ears 
  • Best belly rub 
  • Best leash manners 
  • Best senior dog 
  • Best smile 
  • Spoon race

All dogs must be legally licensed and vaccinated. Please plan to remain with your dog at all times. 

  • This event will take place outside on the library lawn, weather permitting. If we need to cancel due to weather, we will post updates on the library's Facebook page and do our best to contact participants prior to the event time.

  • If you feel like your dog will not participate well that day, please feel free to join us without your dog. We want to ensure that this event is as safe and enjoyable as possible for everyone present. We will plan to have some ice and water outside to help keep everyone cool.

  • We plan to start the first event at 10 am; please feel free to arrive a few minutes early to find a space and get settled in to enjoy the show. We will have a designated judging arena and you are welcome to sit anywhere along the edge.


Monday, June 24, 6-7 pm

Learn how to make a survival shelter like Hatchet, how to set a trap like Katniss from The Hunger Games, how to tie Buck's Call of the Wild rescue knot, and more with local outdoor educator Maggie Stack. Open to ages 10-16. Sign up for your spot here (starting June 3).

Cuentos y canciones - Bilingual Storytimes

For children and their caregivers. Celebrate stories as we share books, rhymes, music and movement in a format appropriate for young children. This program runs approximately 30 minutes. Featuring local educator Angelíca Oses. 

Para niños y sus cuidadores. Celebre los cuentos mientras compartimos libros, rimas, música y movimiento en un formato apropiado para niños pequeños. Este programa dura aproximadamente 30 minutos. Con educadora local Angelíca Oses. 


Middle Grade Book Club

Tuesdays, June 18, July 9, July 30, 2-2:45 pm

Group read titles TBA. 
We'll snack, talk about great books you're reading and end with an activity. Pick up your copy of the (optional) group read at the front desk of the library and come to book club ready to chat about the book! Open to readers ages 9-12. 


Bookmark Design Contest


July 1-27
Can you picture your art on one of the library's bookmarks? Pick up an entry form at the library and return your completed design by July 27, 2024 for a chance to be featured. Click here to read contest rules.
