The Big Read Title: The Underworld by Susan Casey

You are invited to participate in the Mt. Horeb Public Library’s annual community wide read! Each fall we select a book title we encourage everyone to read and talk about. To further the conversation, we host an enriching programming series to delve deeper into the topics covered in the book.

Thanks to the Friends of the Library, we give away 75 copies of the Big Read book to the community. Giveaway Day, and our Kick-Off Event, is Saturday, September 13 at 9am. We recommend arriving early as these books usually go quickly! One book per person.  (Know a young person? They can get a Middle Read or Little Read book!)

This year we are discovering the depths of the ocean in The Underworld with Susan Casey.  For all of human history, the deep ocean has been a source of wonder and terror, an unknown realm that evoked a singular, compelling question: What’s down there? Unable to answer this for centuries, people believed the deep was a sinister realm of fiendish creatures and deadly peril. But now, cutting-edge technologies allow scientists and explorers to dive miles beneath the surface, and we are beginning to understand this strange and exotic underworld:  A place of soaring mountains, smoldering volcanoes, and valleys 7,000 feet deeper than Everest is high, where tectonic plates collide and separate, and extraordinary life forms operate under different rules. Far from a dark void, the deep is a vibrant realm that’s home to pink gelatinous predators and shimmering creatures a hundred feet long and ancient animals with glass skeletons and sharks that live for half a millennium—among countless other marvels.

Programming Series:

Though we don't have an ocean close by (what?!) that doesn't stop os from learning from top professionals in the field. (Or should I say in the water?) We are honored to have experts joining us via zoom. Some speakers be in person, others will join us on the big screen, while we meet together in the library.
